Maddie's Senior Externship Program
Maddie’s® Externship Program has provided immeasurably important experiences to students, nationally and internationally. Other shelter externships offered at ISU College of Veterinary Medicine have traditionally focused on spay/neuter which has been beneficial in educating students on high quality high volume sterilization surgery. Director Baldwin now coordinates the Extern program and is expanding the experience to include other aspects of shelter medicine including, animal health, preventive medicine, behavior assessment, facility assessment and design, public health in shelter medicine, population dynamics and animal sheltering contributions to the community. Over one third of the senior students participate in these opportunities. Working with cooperating shelters to engage students in the medical and behavior aspects of shelter medicine will afford a more comprehensive learning experience. In the last two years Maddie’s® Externs have been placed in eighteen states (Hawaii, California, Utah, Arizona, Idaho, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Maine, Pennsylvania, New York, Colorado, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Florida, Michigan, Illinois, North Carolina) and two international shelters. Maddie’s® Externs are required to complete a paper describing the importance of the experience in enriching their education.
