A certificate is given to those in attendance who wish to take advantage of this offering. The 2012 Maddie's® Shelter Medicine Course will began in January of 2012. We are expecting 40-50 students to enroll Thirty eight students completed the course in 2011. The course outline of topics continues to be refined with strong representation of adoption guarantee issues, and issues pertinent to all sheltering units. Community contributors are key to teaching a comprehensive shelter medicine course and a wide range of speakers are utilized.
Assignments for Maddie's® Shelter Medicine Course involve peer reviewed journal readings and writing assignments, information gathering from the Internet and reporting findings, and position statements about issues. One of our favorite assignments has been to ask students on the first day of class to write how they see themselves interacting with or working with or for shelters as licensed veterinarians. The papers have demonstrated a full range of experiences and have been very educational for us. At the conclusion of the Maddie's® Course, we ask students to submit a final paper addressing how they now see themselves working with or for shelters as licensed veterinarians. We look forward to seeing what a difference this course has made. Final essays from students answering this question can be viewed below. This course continues to be a wonderful way to introduce the Maddie's® Fund and our program. It also allows us to engage students in other educational endeavors (Externships) and discovery (Summer Scholars).
Other Educational Shelter Medicine Experiences are offered at various times of the year.
There are two student groups related to Shelter Medicine. The Feral Cat Alliance and Student Shelter Medicine Organization.
