Maddie's Summer Scholars/ Research Program
Maddie's® Fund is recognized as a continued supporter of the Summer Scholars Program. The Summer Scholar Research Program at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine is designed to introduce veterinary medicine students to research in a wide array of areas such as clinical medicine, animal science, public health, epidemiology, pharmacology, biomechanics, neuroscience, immunology, parasitology, molecular genetics and cellular or molecular pathology. Find more information on the CVM Summer Scholars program. Scholars investigate specific issues that match their particular interest with the work of an established researcher. Scholars will work with faculty mentors and other research personnel for approximately three months (May-August). Through hands-on experiences, seminars and tours, students will gain valuable perspectives on the exciting roles played by veterinarians in biomedical and public health research.
Special seminars and journal review groups will assist scholars in applying critical thinking skills to research, preparing hypothesis-based proposals, designing statistically sound experiments and interpreting and presenting data. The training program is offered through Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, and application for participation are sought from students enrolled in all colleges and schools of veterinary Medicine in the U.S.
Maddie's® Summer Scholars focus on specific needs of shelter animals within the Summer Scholars Program and continues to be instrumental in engagement within the educational and sheltering communities and on occasion to generate new and valuable information about shelter animals in our region. In addition to a great learning experience, our students receive three credits toward graduation. In 2011, Maddie's Summer Scholars Research Program supported six students. Their topics of inquiry were "Serosurvey of Influenza A Virus Exposure among Healthy Docs in Midwest Shelters," (Koonce Carlie, 2011) "Use of a Human approach Test to examine behavioral characteristics of dogs housed at an animal shelter: dogs impounded for legal cases versus strays," (Larsen, Lauren, 2011) "Identifying the Most Effective and Cost Efficient Ear Mite Treatment for Shelter Cats,"(Houge, Emily, 2011) "Assessment of Cost-effectiveness of Oral/Systemic Topical Anti-flea medication use in Animal Shelters," (Sorensen, Crystal, 2011) "An Epidemiological Study of Mycoplasma Species in Felines Utilizing a Novel Pan-Myco PCR Assay,"(Donnett, Uri, 2011) and "Investigation of the Role of Onychectomy in Behavioral House Soiling in Cats."
